these days | in our autumn garden . . .

we're planting peas and coriander and tuscan kale. when the tomatoes have finished we'll plant garlic in their place. we dug up a bucketful of potatoes (elliot thought it was like digging for treasure). we made a simple bench to sit on and have our morning tea. we removed the summer reticulation (maybe a little prematurely). there's always weeding to be done. we picked a couple of pumpkins. we'll leave the rest on the vine for a bit longer. the herbs are going crazy. sage, parsley, basil, thyme. we put some broccoli seeds in. i've ordered some sweet pea seeds. i'm hoping the teeny tiny asparagus plants that have popped up will make it. we have banana passionfruit coming out our ears. we'll get a couple more zucchini before i pull the plants up. there's a good amount of spinach and rainbow chard to be picked for breakfast. there's just the right mix of cool and sunny and damp. spending time in the garden is such a pleasure at this time of the year.

these random little garden posts have become rather valuable . i way i can refer back year to year and see what was happening when. what worked and what failed. when the best time is to plant, harvest, pull up. a way to add a bit more structure and logic to my typically random methods of growing things.

  1. Lovely photos of your veggie patch Rachel! It looks so healthy. It is a perfect time of the year for the garden I think...not too hot or cold. Happy gardening to you :)

  3. Just bought some beautiful purple garlic from my co-op today and plan on planting that this week in my wheelbarrow. Haven't ever grown garlic so am quite excited. Lovely to see what others are doing in their garden right now. x

  4. I love garden posts Rachel and your Autumn garden is looking very gorgeous. It's nice to see what others are doing in their veggie patches. Lots of kale, spinach and rainbow chard here but we are failing miserably on the herb front.Mel x

  5. Your garden sounds bountiful. I've just cleared most of mine out ready for some winter planting. I do however have some rhubarb which is coming along swimmingly.
We've got a good weekend forecast this week, so a planting we will be

  6. Your garden sounds full of goodness! We've let ours lapse as we're designing a new garden so that we can utilise every inch of space to make our garden fuller! Hopefully we can start planting again soon! I love the potatoes!

P.S Have you read a book called 'The Potato People' by Pamela Allen? Your little ones will love it :)

  7. Looking lovely, Rachel. I'm enjoying the same - pottering about in this weather is my favourite thing to do. I've got my brassicas and snow peas in, beetroot and leafy stuff too. Some alliums in but need to get some garlic to add to the list. Leek seeds need planting too. Happy gardening in this divine autumn weather x

  10. It's just the best time of year in the garden in my opinion. Lot's of summer harvest (though for us not as good as previous years) and it feels good to have some food put away for later. And fresh potatoes are just out of this world, aren't they? :)
