all in this together . . .

last year i took thousands of photos. yet when my mother-in-law asked for a family shot of the four of us to include in her christmas letter, i found a grand total of one. taken on the beach in hawaii, with the camera resting on a log and much complaining from my people while i set it up.

i'd much rather be behind the camera taking the photos. but this year i'm pushing myself out of my comfort zone and into the shot. mostly looking awkward and very rarely looking at the camera. but at least there and in the picture while i document our days.

{I bought a cheap and nifty little remote shutter release on ebay.
it's removed the pain of waiting for the self timer and made shots like these a lot more fun}

  1. I LOVE it! I think that your post is so important for moms to read. I have looked through photos of our family and it is hard for me to find any with me in them either. And now that I'm older I wanted a photo of my ma and me when I was young and guess what?? I could only find a few of her and I together from when I was young...could be because she had six kids..Ha! Bravo to you for pushing yourself out of your comfort zone! Your kids will thank you one day! And your family is absolutely beautiful!

  3. Such beautiful shots!!! And hello lovely Bump :-) I never think to use the self-timer to take a family shot but instead have to rely on family gatherings which only really happen once a year at Christmas before we get a shot altogether. Don't think we have a family photo yet with Flynn and he is already 3 months old - oops! Have a great weekend! Mel xx

  5. i hate having my photo taken and i have very few photos of myself with my family. my mother in law has also requested a family photo with all of us so we are due to take some in the next couple of days... dread! i already have plans to send her a black and white shot because i am sure i will look better in black and white.
    your family shots above are gorgeous, so natural and i think its sometimes nicer when everyone isn't looking at the camera x

  6. Lovely photos, Rachel. So important to be in front of the camera sometimes - for ours kids later on. My mum died when I was 18. She was a really camera shy person and I have hardly any photos of her. I didn't want my son to have the same thing so I make sure I'm in as many photos as possible. Though these days I'm a little more hesitant;) xx

  7. We are completely the same. Always shots of he kids, shots of dad with kids, shots of mum with kids (after I've said 'can you take a photo of me this time'!)but none of all of us.....very important to have. For them, for him, for me for US :)

  8. I went to a three hour how to use your camera blah blah blah, not a whole lot stuck except he did say " make sure you hand your camera to others, your kids whoever because in a 100 years you will not exist in a photo. I took that advice away and hand my camera to my eldest often although like you our last family photo was from about 18 mths ago !!!!! Off to get my shutter release out of it's box. I love your shots.

  9. They are lovely shots. I also relate and a remote is a fantastic idea. I think I'll look into one right now! Thanks for the nudge.

  15. They're lovely snaps. I take timed photos every time we go away and they're a lovely reminder. I certainly don't love how I look in every one, but you have nothing to worry about at all, you're gorgeous!
