on quitting facebook...

this week i deactivate my facebook account
there was just too much noise
and not enough value

the benefits of having it
and the rare bits of worth
were swamped by the irrelevant and unnecessary

it sucked my time
and it depleted my energy
so i let it go

now i can focus
on more important things ~
real people and real connections

it feels good. i feel free.

  1. It can certainly get that way. Good for you, enjoy the freedom! x

  2. That't it. You have convinced me. I have taken it off my toolbar and am going to give myself until the end of June to let go completely. Imagine the possibilities!

  3. I did the same a little while ago. The feeling gets better. I'm pretty certain you won't go back to it. I have no inclination to go back to it.

  4. I can totally relate to quitting facebook. I could never give up reading beautiful blogs though... I wonder what the next craze will be.

  5. I did the same back in February and I haven't looked back.

  6. The phonecall instead of Facebook message was certainly a pleasure!

  7. I'm not a huge fan of Facebook. I deactivated my account a couple of years ago and I don't miss it at all. It is, however, good a keeping in touch with others interstate, or promoting your enterprise, but I think that's about all. At work I hear (almost daily) a couple of work colleagues judging and critising others about what they post, their photos and everything else. I would be very hurtful to the ones targeted, if they knew.

    1. Good on you! Cam and I deactivated and deleted our facebook accounts almost three years ago. We thought facebook was a bit silly ;-) I cherish my relationships and I find it more personal to email, call or meet up with my loved ones. And like you say, the noise is much softer without it. x

  10. I don't understand the appeal of Facebook - the banality of it is too much. I have a page for work (because those apparently in the know say that's what we should do) but don't know why people want to 'like' it. Give me a well written blog any day.

  11. Oh snap Rach! I deactivated mine too after starting my little bloggy break and I must say I haven't missed it one bit.

  12. I de-faced a few weeks ago too! Haven't missed it one bit, but I hardly used it at all anyway. I do miss a few people though :)

  13. I think i need to wean myself off it. I will try to cut down to 2-3 times a week instead of daily. I sound like an addict!I'd love to give it up completely but it's the main way my friends organise catch ups and i like being able to chat to friends that live far away.

  15. Congrats! I've been thinking of doing the same - I have an account there but I never use it (I think the last activity was 2 years ago!). I don't like it for exactly all the reasons you've mentioned. I hope this clears some space in your head :) xx

  16. Yay for you! That said, I am thinking of starting an account...perhaps it will be short-lived.

  17. Oh gosh Rach, I couldn't agree more. I've never been a huge fan of facebook but with writing work it actually can be a help. However, the busyness of it is completely overwhelming - and I don't deal well with chaos. You've got me thinking ...x

  18. I hear you. Although without it I wouldn't have reconnected with old school buddies, and I wouldn't have got as many happy birthday wishes as i did this year!!! i don't spend much time on it though, it's all a bit much for me too somedays. happy wednesday to you. Jane x

  20. I read this and thought: that's it, I will too, for the same reasons. There is so much CRAP on there, and you have to sift through it all to find the good stuff! Life's too short for that! So I made my announcement last night, said I would come on much less often... and suddenly there was a slew of comments from people who agree with the amount of crap, but some suggestions to cut down on the number of friends. Well, I AM a Facebook addict, and there are things on Facebook I value a lot, people I only stay in touch with through Facebook, and other stuff I learn from it. So back I went this morning, with a new announcement LOL. I am now in the process of unfriending those people who post too much crap.

But... thanks heaps for making me realise. It's just not worth spending a single moment looking at crap. But for me, it's worth having a crap-free Facebook.

  21. I deactivate my fb every school holidays and love the break it gives me. The more school holidays & fb holidays I have the less i am interested in it when I activate it. I know I will deactivate for good in the near future, its slowly happening here

  22. I'm yet to quit Facebook - but I haven't spent nearly as much time on it as I used to. I find after a quick look at my friends updates I've gotten all I want from it and don't find the need to keep constantly checking it for new stuff to look at.

  23. and yet you blog!

  24. I permanently deleted my facebook page about 18 months ago. I haven't missed it once, and I'm still connected to the people who matter.

  26. I've never actually been on Facebook :) I didn't see the point when if I wanted to know what friends/family were up to, I'd call or email them. As for sharing photos etc. I always flick them on to friends and family I know would like to see them. And as for other Facebook 'friends', to be honest, I don't have the time to be interested in what people I went to school with or old acquaintances are up to. Blogging takes up enough time for me but as it's my only real 'me' time, that's fine :)
