the six-year-old transformation. . .

her baby teeth have started to fall out. she dances and prances and climbs and leaps about the house. she's mastering new skills at a rapid rate. she's stretching out. all long legs and arms. she rides her bike for miles and miles. she questions authority and wants to be in charge. she's picking up all sorts of new information. asking innocent questions about rude fingers and 'F' words. she loves a physical challenge. loves to help out. i've been teaching her how to swim. she fearlessly climbs high up in the trees. she's reaching for skinny jeans and leggings over dresses. all of a sudden she's aware of what other people think. so many things are boring. she constantly amazes me with the things she makes. she's knitted her own beanie and scarf at school. she sneaks things into her bag. she whispers secrets in my ear. plays string games with her hands. she makes up songs and rhymes. she has a dry, witty sense of humour. it's a wonderful, exciting and challenging time. the six-year-old transformation.

i've borrowed a book from aila's teacher titled 'you're not the boss of me, understanding the six/seven year old transformation' by ruth ker.  it covers many of the physical and emotional/social changes that can be expected at this age and how to approach this time of change. it's written for teachers, but i've found it very helpful in the home environment.

  2. Oh my goodness gracious, I am right there with you. Che just lost his first tooth and the intensity of the 6/7 change is upon us (I actually think it began when Daniel was away). I've been wondering whether to write about it too and I think I will; based on the fact that not many people know/talk about it and I think it needs to be common knowledge. Much love to you x

  7. Very eye-opening. Is it possible for this transformation to start happening at five and a half..? My oldest lost four teeth within the first two terms of starting school and he feels like a completely different boy to me than last year...
