my creative space

I picked up a "simple" tunic pattern a while back. I've been wanting to make something for me for ages.

At first glance I figured that no buttons or zippers was akin to easy peasy.

I didn't account for how much fussing that upturned collar and associated facing would take.

Sewing grown ups clothing is so much more cumbersome than making things for little people. Laying out. Cutting. Stitching. It all takes more time and effort. I must admit, I got a bit over it.

I'm fairly happy with how this turned out, though. A bit sack like, but I don't mind that in a frock. My husband said it needed a belt, but I don't really do decorative belts. Feel like a bit of a try hard.

I've worn it a couple of times. Got a few "I like your dress. Did you make it?" It's the second part of the comment that worries me. All things I make for me seem to be so obviously handmade. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I guess.

My first play with a tripod and the self timer. I think the macro setting is much more my thing.

  1. Looks super - lovely and cool! Sometimes "simple" turns out to be "not-so-simple" - you've done a wonderful job with it though. Well done. Anita. xx
    PS. I reckon it's better belt-less too.

  3. It's a gorgeous colour & it looks fabulous. I feel about the same about brooches...I just don't feel I can "pull it off".

  5. Lovely dress and great pic! It doesn't look handmade (as if that is a negative anyway!) - classic style and colour that will never age.

  7. It's perfect. Love it. People probably ask if you made it because they know you are very creative and talented, not because it looks dodgy!
But I'm with you on the cumbersome-factor. Not nearly so gratifying, making for big people... yawn.

  8. It looks great. You could always try a brooch if belts aren't your thing... but it looks great just as it is. It might have been 'fussy', but that upturned collar looks awesome.

  11. Love a good tunic - it's fabulous! I don't think it looks home made at all - they probably just say that because they know you make other things. K

  12. despite the extra work, the collar really does look great. well done. i've almost given up making adult sized clothing for the same reason. but then again, it is so great to be able to wear stuff that you have made yourself. (particularly when they are as fabulous as this dress!)
